FAQ

What should I expect in my first session?

In the initial appointment, our therapists will conduct a comprehensive assessment of your current life situation and the factors that have influenced the development of the difficulties for which you are seeking assistance. This will also involve a discussion of your goals for treatment. The assessment assists in the development of the individualised treatment plan that will be most helpful for you. We understand that talking to a new person about your difficulties and goals in life can provoke anxiety and so we will aim to put you at ease in your first appointment.

What is the difference between a psychologist, a clinical psychologist, a psychiatrist and a counsellor?

Psychologists are experts in human behaviour and use therapeutic strategies to create change in our lives. A Clinical Psychologist will have a Masters or Doctorate Degree in Clinical Psychology, which includes practical training in Mental Health. A Psychiatrist is a medically trained doctor who has done specialist training in Mental Health. A Counsellor is a specialist in supportive therapy to assist people to explore, interpret and resolve issues of a personal or social nature. At Creating Change all our counsellors have a Masters Degree in Counselling.

Do I really need 10 sessions?

Can I get a Medicare or private health fund rebate?

The highest Medicare rebate is available when seeing Creating Change clinical psychologists with a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP. Medicare does not cover relationship counselling. Private health funds do provide cover for psychology and some will provide cover for relationship counselling. It is essential however that you check your level of cover with your individual provider.

Which treatment would be best: medication or psychological therapy?

This depends on the problems you are experiencing. Many issues can be addressed via therapy alone. Some are most effectively treated using a combination of medication and Psychological Therapy. Very occasionally medication would be suggested in isolation, usually until the individual’s symptoms are stabilized enough to participate in therapy.

What Immediate Benefits of Therapy Will I Notice?

Tackle Your Circumstances Head-On
One of the most significant benefits of therapy is the ability to address your challenges before they escalate. By confronting your issues now, you prevent them from deteriorating further and gain better control over your life.

Feel Supported
Having someone to talk to about your concerns is invaluable. Therapy provides a space where you can unload your worries, helping to relieve the burden and steer your mental health in a positive direction.

Learn Essential Tools and Techniques
Therapy equips you with practical tools like Mindfulness and other techniques you can practice at home. These strategies allow you to start making positive changes immediately, rather than letting your mental health decline over time.

Improve Your Sleep
Engaging with a therapist can help you achieve a greater sense of control and calmness, which can lead to better sleep. Improved sleep is crucial for maintaining your overall well-being and functioning day to day.

Maintain Healthy Relationships and Family Life
Therapy doesn’t just benefit you; it also helps keep your relationships and family life on track. By addressing your challenges early, you can prevent stress from straining your relationships and maintain a harmonious home environment.

What Are The Costs of Not Starting Therapy Straight Away?

Amplified Anxiety and Stress
If you wait for the “right time” to seek help, feelings of anxiety and stress can grow, making it even harder to take that crucial first step. The longer you delay, the more these feelings can magnify, potentially leading to more significant issues.

Challenges That Don’t Improve
Without immediate support, your current challenges are unlikely to resolve on their own. You may find yourself struggling to manage distress by yourself, which can be overwhelming. Therapy offers the tools and guidance required to work through your current circumstances.

Increased Pressure on Relationships
Delaying support can lead to increased pressure on your relationships and home life. The stress can intensify, moving you and your loved ones in the wrong direction. This can have long-term harmful effects on your family dynamics and personal connections, and you could push people you love away.

Impact on Your Mood and Those Around You
Consider how your current mood is affecting you and those you live with. Untreated emotional difficulties can significantly impact everyone in your household, not just yourself. Talking to a therapist can help alleviate this weight, improving the at home environment for you and your loved ones.
