Teenagers can often feel lost or unsure of who they are as they develop.
Do you have the tools to support them in deciding on their future career and life decisions?
Are you worried social media is influencing them as they strive to keep up with friends or maintain a certain ‘image’?
Encouraging your teenager to develop their sense of self means helping them understand what truly matters to them. When they live according to their values and work towards meaningful goals, it can lead to greater wellbeing and life satisfaction. But teens can easily be influenced by their peers and friends, steering them in unwanted directions. Many struggle with understanding who they are and what they want from life, often without a clear pathway forward. This can make it tough for them to make wise decisions about activities, friendships, ambitions, and what to pursue after school.
Signs your teenager is struggling with a sense of direction:
- What’s important to you? – Everyone has values, but they differ for every individual. Your teen’s values have been shaped by your influence, their temperament, and their experiences. For example, they might value being active or spending time with friends.
- Are you doing what’s important to you? – When they look at their daily activities, are they filled with things they feel pressured to do, or are they engaging in activities that matter to them long-term?
- How can you start doing what’s important to you? – For each value they aren’t living out, help them set goals that align with these values. If they value time with friends, encourage them to spend less time online and more time planning social outings or inviting friends over.
So what’s the next step as a Parent?
Guiding your teenager takes patience and persistence. As parents, it’s not always easy to find the right words or make time for these important conversations. Seeking support can enhance your approach and help guide them toward a fulfilling future.
